LARGOS, CORETOS E PRAÇAS DE BELÉM - Monumenta

A praça é a única da
capital paraense cercada por
um gradil de ferro, e no seu
centro fica o nicho da imagem
de Nossa Senhora, a qual
permanece lá durante a
quinzena do Círio.
Em volta desse altar central
erguido para abrigar a Virgem
de Nazaré na chegada da
procissão do Círio, milhares
de pessoas se aglomeram em
rezas contínuas, entrecortadas
de pedidos e agradecimentos.
Durante muitos anos ela foi
o local do arraial profano que
completava as festividades do
Círio de Nazaré. Após reforma
geral na década
de 1980, os
regozijos foram
transferidos para
um espaço
lateral, construiu-se
um altar central
coberto e
envidraçado, e o
piso da praça foi
revestido de placas
de mármore com
ilhas gramadas, em
que se instalaram
elementos
simbólicos
religiosos, entre
eles o busto do
Praça Santuário de Nazaré.

It is the only square in the
capital of Pará that is
surrounded by iron railings, and
on its center stands the niche
where the image of Our Lady is
placed during the fifteen days
of the Círio festivities.
Around this central altar,
built to receive the Virgin of
Nazareth brought by the Círio
procession, thousands of
people gather in continuous
prayers, intermingled with
supplications and expressions
of gratitude.
For many years, it also
hosted the profane arraial
(typical festivities) that marked
the end of the Círio
de Nazaré
celebrations. The
square underwent
total reconstruction
in the 1980’s, and
afterwards, the
festivities were moved
to an adjacent space.
A glass-covered
central altar was built,
and the square was
paved with slabs of
marble interspersed
with islands of lawn,
where symbolic
religious elements
were placed, among
