130 As Praças The Town Squares A PRAÇA VISCONDE DO RIO BRANCO NOMINAÇÃO HISTÓRICA Largo das Mercês / Praça Visconde de Mauá / Praça Visconde do Rio Branco Em fins do século XIX, a Intendência de Belém promoveu nessa praça uma urbanização caprichada, quando alterou seu nome para o atual. Curiosamente, lá Praça Visconde do Rio Branco. Monumento ao Dr. José da Gama Malcher. VISCONDE DO RIO BRANCO SQUARE HISTORICAL DENOMINATION Largo das Mercês / Visconde de Mauá Square / Visconde do Rio Branco Square In the late 19 th century, this square was carefully landscaped by Belém’s Intendancy, and its name was changed to the one currently used. Curiously, it features no references to Visconde do Rio Branco Square. Monument to Dr. José da Gama Malcher.

A estátua central — fundida em bronze na cidade de Lisboa — homenageia o médico José da Gama Malcher, que por vários períodos presidiu a Província do Pará e a Câmara Municipal de Belém. Na intendência de Antônio Lemos, já no século XX, teve removido o gradil que a Visconde do Rio Branco.
