Seu nome homenageia o
décimo bispo do Pará.
Com seu pequeno tamanho,
essa pracinha não detém valor
urbanístico para a cidade, mas
seu valor histórico é
incontestável. Foi esse
logradouro a origem do segundo
núcleo habitacional de Belém,
graças à fundação do convento
— hoje colégio administrado
pelas Irmãs Dorotéias — de
Santo Antônio pelos
idos do segundo
quartel do século
XVII.
O Convento de
Santo Antônio e a
Igreja são exemplares
da cultura artística
ibérica e franciscana.
Apresentam painéis em
azulejos portugueses
representativos da arte
sacra da época. Sua
estrutura severa e
sólida foi erguida à
margem da Baía de
Guajará e a atual
Praça Dom Macedo Costa.

Macedo Costa Square
The name is a tribute to
Pará’s tenth bishop.
This small square is not
important in urbanistic terms,
but its historic value is
unquestionable. This is the
place where Belém’s second
settlement started, thanks to
the founding of Santo Antônio
Convent – now a school run
by the Dorothean Sisters – on
the second quarter of the 17 th
century.
The Convent
and the Church of
Santo Antônio are
fine examples of
Iberian Franciscan
artistic culture. They
feature Portuguese tile
panels that are highly
representative of the
sacred art of the time.
