em seus caminhos e
implementava o plantio de
árvores nos terrenos centrais.
Na época anterior às
intervenções modernizadoras
do intendente Antônio Lemos,
os espaços públicos de Belém
não eram todos urbanizados
ou ajardinados. Eles serviam
apenas como locais de
passagem.
Apesar de algumas poucas
praças estarem razoavelmente
bem cuidadas, não havia o
costume de passear e se
encontrar por lá, que só
começou com o advento da
economia da borracha, na
transição entre os séculos
XIX e XX.
O intendente Antônio José de Lemos
(1843/1913), político paraense
nascido no Maranhão, é considerado
até hoje como o melhor prefeito que
já administrou Belém (1897/1910).
Suas iniciativas urbanísticas foram de
tal relevância que a cidade
equatorial se transformou, em parte,
num reflexo das mais desenvolvidas
cidades européias, inclusive nos seus
hábitos e costumes.

meeting-places or for leisure.
That only started to happen
after the advent of the rubber
economy, in the transition
from the 19 th to the 20 th
century.
Intendant Antônio José de Lemos
(1843/1913), a Paraense politician
born in Maranhão, is considered to
this day the best mayor Belém has
ever had (1897/1910). His urban
planning initiatives were so
relevant that the equatorial town
became, in part, a reflex of the
most developed European cities,
also in terms of its habits and
customs.
