No exemplo dos frades de
Santo Antônio, por concessão
da Câmara, os frades da
Ordem da Redenção dos
Cativos, que viriam a ser
conhecidos posteriormente
como Mercedários, foram
autorizados a edificar também
seu convento e sua capela. O
local doado situava-se no
terço intermediário do
caminho que transpunha o
Piri, entre o núcleo inicial e o
Convento de Santo Antônio,
seguindo a lateral do rio.
Em 1640, a edificação do
conjunto convento-capela,
construída de costas para as
águas com taipa e palha,
estava pronta para receber os
frades vindos do Equador. Na
sua parte frontal, pelo lado da
Campina, foi aberto um largo
que se denominou de Largo
das Mercês, hoje Praça
Visconde do Rio Branco.
Nesse largo, o sexto aberto na
povoação, o comércio se
desenvolveu de forma muito
mais ampla do que o existente
no núcleo inicial.
Com esses dois novos
núcleos no lado dos campos
(chamado pelos moradores de
Campina), o caminho

the village, commerce
developed steadily, soon
