Nos últimos trinta anos do século XIX, com o aproveitamento mundial do produto da seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis), árvore nativa da Amazônia, teve início o chamado Ciclo da Borracha, período de opulência sem par na região, e que transformou a dinâmica da vida na cidade, produzindo um elevado aumento populacional em conseqüência da imigração. A contagiante riqueza da borracha promoveu uma série de melhorias urbanas na capital da província. No alvorecer do século XX, Belém já assumia a feição de um canteiro de obras, onde os locais tradicionais (largos, praças, avenidas e ruas antes abandonadas e insalubres) recebiam tratamento refinado espelhado no Velho Mundo.
