Belém during the Belle Époque
A Belém da Belle Époque 48
Uma referência estética para o
país.
Ainda durante a gestão de
Lemos, em 1907, por iniciativa
do governo federal,
começaram as obras do porto
de Belém, que se prolongaram
até 1914, quando foram
interrompidas pelas
dificuldades financeiras da
executora americana Port of
Pará Company. Nesse período,
a frente da cidade foi
ampliada em direção ao rio
com um grande aterro
necessário às obras. Essa
intervenção corrigiu a ligação
do antigo Igarapé das Almas
(atual Avenida Visconde de
Souza Franco) com a Baía de
Guajará, e permitiu a
canalização da Doca do
Reduto, que se transformou na
atual Praça General
Magalhães.
A extensa Avenida
Marechal Hermes e o Bulevar
Castilhos França, situados
entre os armazéns e os prédios
já existentes na cidade, foram
resultados imediatos do
aterramento promovido para
as obras do cais. No longo
terreno marginal à avenida,
durante algum tempo nada foi
aesthetic reference for the
whole country.
It was also during Lemos’
administration that, by initiative
of the Federal Government, the
construction works for the
Belém harbor were started. The
works continued until 1914,
when they were interrupted due
to financial difficulties
encountered by the contractor,
the American Port of Pará
Company. At that time, the city
expanded towards the river with
a vast landfill required by the
construction works. This
intervention improved the
communications between the
old Igarapé das Almas
(currently Visconde de Souza
Franco Avenue) and the
Guajará Bay, and enabled the
channeling of the Reduto
Docks, that became the present
General Magalhães Square.
The long Marechal Hermes
Avenue and the Castilhos
França Boulevard, located
amidst existing warehouses
and buildings, were the
immediate results of the
landfill created for building the
harbor. For some time, nothing
was built on the extensive plot
of land along the avenue,
