LARGOS DE FESTAS, SUPLÍCIOS E EXECUÇÕES
Largos for Festivals, Floggings and Executions
Desde a fundação da Feliz
Lusitânia, no início de 1616, a
necessidade de expandir a
colônia foi diretamente ligada
a seu aumento populacional.
Os portugueses livres e os
degredados, os outros europeus
em geral, os mamelucos
derivados da miscigenação
entre os conquistadores e as
nativas, os naturais agregados e
os escravos africanos foram
responsáveis pelo caldeamento
de raças que ampliou a
ocupação da nova terra.
Com o crescimento
gradual, os largos abertos na
densa Floresta Amazônica
eram os centros de reunião da
vida urbana, os locais onde se
realizavam as cerimônias
cívicas e toda sorte de
festividades, desde religiosas e
recreativas às punitivas,
servindo ainda de mercados e
feiras. Neles se localizavam os
edifícios principais que mais
enobreciam a cidade: as
igrejas da fé, as casas dos
governadores, da Câmara e da
Cadeia, como símbolos do
poder e da ordem.
Ever since the founding of

1616, the need to expand the

its population growth.
The Portuguese, both the
free men and the convicts;
other Europeans in general;
the mamelucos, descending
from the miscegenation of
white conquerors and native
women; the natives who had
been integrated into colonial
society; and the African slaves
accounted for the melting-pot
of races that expanded the
occupation of the new land.
As the city gradually grew,
the largos opened in the dense
Amazonian Forest became
centers of urban life, the places
where civic ceremonies and
public punishments took place,
and all sort of festivities, both
religious and profane, were
held, serving also as sites for
markets and fairs. The main and
noblest buildings were located
in the largos: the churches, the
houses of governors, the City
Chamber and the Jailhouse, as
symbols of power and order.
