africana. Há relatos da
grande atração que eram tais
castigos para os moradores.
Os açoites se realizavam
normalmente aos domingos,
em frente à Igreja de Nossa
Senhora da Graça, a Matriz.
Esse fato incomodava muito
os sacerdotes. Eles
freqüentemente se queixavam
ao rei, pedindo que aquele
instrumento de punição real
fosse transferido para outro
logradouro, por ser o Largo
da Matriz considerado local
de religião e fé.
É irônico pensar que em
um local de oração em frente
à Catedral de Belém, o ser
humano durante muito tempo
tenha sido supliciado com
ampla assistência e vibração
popular.
Só em 1757 o bispo do
Pará, frei Miguel de Bulhões,
autorizado pelo rei a
interferir nas lidas políticas
da vila, encomendou a um
dos desenhistas da expedição
científica do naturalista
Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira,
