índios e brancos se uniam
para vivenciar, num
momento fora do trabalho
cotidiano e dos olhos
vigilantes da Coroa, a
alegria, a música, os
símbolos de múltiplas
leituras, a distribuição de
comidas trabalhosas e,
principalmente, um momento
de relativização da ordem
estabelecida, simbolizado
pelas fantasias e pelos
acontecimentos das festas.
Talvez por isso o festejar
colonial tenha sido
constante, a ponto de os
folguedos incorporarem-se à
cultura brasileira como
linguagem favorita, para a
qual se traduzem os reais
valores do povo.
Acomunidade residente no
início da Feliz Lusitânia só
tinha uma festa religiosa, sem
nenhuma parte profana, em
homenagem a Nossa Senhora
da Graça, que consistia de
novenas e ladainhas durante
nove dias de maio, em frente à
pequena ermida existente,
encerrando-se com uma
rasoura que circulava o Largo
da Matriz. Esse largo, que se
chama hoje Praça Dom Frei
Caetano Brandão, abriga a

consisting of nine days of
novenae and litanies, that took
place during the month of
May, in front of the small
chapel then existing, and
ending with a procession
circling the Largo da Matriz.
This largo, now called Frei
Caetano Brandão Square,
houses Belém’s Cathedral, and
