Amparados na riqueza
gerada pela economia da
borracha entre o fim do século
XIX e o início do século XX,
os governos municipais
trouxeram para a cidade parte
da cultura urbanística e
paisagística dos maiores
centros europeus.
Foi a época da chamada
“arquitetura metalúrgica”, que
era utilizada das mais diversas
formas construtivas e
decorativas, cujos principais
expoentes foram:
Grã-Bretanha, França, Bélgica
e Alemanha.
Apesar de dezenas de
fundições concorrerem no
mercado internacional,
destacou-se como fornecedor
ao Brasil dos produtos de ferro
fundido pré-fabricados a
Saracen Foundry, de Glasgow,
na Escócia, pertencente à
firma Walter Macfarlane & Co.
Sua agressiva política de
vendas baseada em catálogos
com centenas de tipos e
formas, permitiu-lhe vantagem
no mercado público e privado
brasileiro.
OS CORETOS
The Bandstands
In the late 19 th and early
20 th century, relying on the
wealth generated by the
flourishing of the rubber
economy, municipal
governments brought into the
city elements of the
town-planning and
landscaping culture of the
major European centers.
That was the time of the
so-called “metallurgical
architecture”, which was used
in many different ways, both in
construction and in decoration,
mainly in Great Britain, France,
Belgium and Germany.
Although dozens of
different foundries then
competed in the international
markets, the main exporter of
prefabricated cast iron
products to Brazil was Saracen
Foundry, from Glasgow,
Scotland, belonging to the firm
Walter Macfarlane & Co. Its
aggressive sales policy, based
on catalogs with hundreds of
products of all shapes and
forms, gave it an advantageous
position in Brazilian public and
private markets.
