LARGOS, CORETOS E PRAÇAS DE BELÉM - Monumenta

Nos últimos trinta anos do
século XIX, com o
aproveitamento mundial do
produto da seringueira
(Hevea brasiliensis), árvore
nativa da Amazônia, teve
início o chamado Ciclo da
Borracha, período de
opulência sem par na região,
e que transformou a
dinâmica da vida na cidade,
produzindo um elevado
aumento populacional em
conseqüência da imigração.
A contagiante riqueza da
borracha promoveu uma
série de melhorias urbanas
na capital da província.
No alvorecer do século XX,
Belém já assumia a feição de
um canteiro de obras, onde os
locais tradicionais (largos,
praças, avenidas e ruas antes
abandonadas e insalubres)
recebiam tratamento refinado
espelhado no Velho Mundo.
Sem esquecer a
amplitude da cidade até seu
limite da primeira légua
patrimonial, a Intendência

During the last three
decades of the 19 th century,
with the a growing worldwide
demand for the products of the
rubber-tree (Hevea brasiliensis),
a native species of the
Amazonian region, the so-called
Rubber Cycle began, a time of
unrivaled opulence that
completely transformed the
dynamics of life in the city, and
promoted a steep population
growth through increased
immigration. The rubber wealth,
that spread through the city as a
whole, brought about many
urban improvements in the
province’s capital.
At the dawn of the 20 th
century, Belém looked like a
construction site, where
traditional places (previously
neglected and insalubrious
largos, squares, avenues and
streets) were being treated
with Old World refinement.
Paying equal attention to
the city as a whole, as far as
the limits of its first patrimonial
league (the portion of territory
originally donated by the
Largos, Coretos e Praças de Belém
