The Largos
política republicana fizeram o
poder se decidir pela
substituição gradual dos largos,
nome tipicamente português,
pelas então modernas praças.
Conseqüentemente, apenas
três largos mantiveram a
habitualidade dessa
denominação pelo povo de
Belém:
O LARGO DE SÃO JOÃO
BATISTA

Local histórico originário
dos primeiros anos da
colonização da cidade
(1622), foi aberto na mata
quando a população decidiu
erguer uma ermida em
devoção a São João Batista
afastada do núcleo inicial
para realizar as festividades
em homenagem ao santo,
conforme se fazia em
Portugal.
Da ermida original derivou
a construção da atual igreja de
São João Batista, realizada no
governo de Ataíde Teive
(1763–1772) e deu-se pelo

Consequently, only three of
these urban spaces are still
known as largos by the people
of Belém:

A historical landmark from
the early years of the town’s
colonization (1622), this
clearing was opened in the
forest when the population
decided to build a chapel
dedicated to Saint John the
Baptist, away from the
original settlement, to host
the festivities in honor of that
saint, according to
Portuguese customs.
The original chapel was
replaced by the current
Church of São João Batista,
built during the
administration of Ataíde Teive
