LARGOS, CORETOS E PRAÇAS DE BELÉM - Monumenta

Chamou-se Rua do Norte e foi
a primeira rua da colônia.
Como historicamente essa rua
foi aberta apenas em 1621,
constata-se que Belém,
durante cinco anos, não se
estendeu além do forte e do
Largo da Matriz.
Entretanto, após a abertura
da primeira rua, os
colonizadores começaram a
traçar os caminhos do
desenvolvimento urbano. Eles
abriram vias nas
circunvizinhanças da Matriz,
tendo o forte como eixo focal
de uma expansão
radiocêntrica no desenho das
ruas.
Em honra de São João
Batista, em 1622, construíram
uma ermida afastada do
núcleo inicial, palco das
festividades dedicadas ao
santo. Para chegar a essa
capela, rasgaram o caminho
chamado à época de Rua de
São João, iniciado no Largo da
Matriz e culminando num
pequeno logradouro frontal
denominado Largo de São
João Batista, atualmente Praça
República do Líbano (o
terceiro largo da colônia).
Guamá. It was called Rua do
Norte (North Street), and
was the first street in the
colony. As, historically, this
street did not exist until
1621, we can infer that, for
five years, Belém was
restricted to the fort and the
Largo da Matriz.
Once the first street was
opened, however, the settlers
started to plan for the future
urban development. They
opened paths in the areas
surrounding the Matriz,
using the fort as the focal
axis for a radial expansion of
the street layout.
In honor of Saint John the
Baptist, and to host the
festivities dedicated to this
saint, a chapel was built in
1622, on the outskirts of the
early settlement. To reach
this chapel, they opened the
path then called Rua de São
João (Saint John Street),
beginning at the Largo da
Matriz and arriving at a
small front square called
Largo de São João Batista,
currently República do
Líbano Square (the colony’s
third largo).
