novos habitantes do Pará
tinham nas festas,
principalmente as religiosas,
um momento de descanso,
devoção, lazer e renovação do
ânimo e das esperanças, além
da afirmação de seus valores,
mesmo distantes de sua terra
natal.
As festas foram importantes
também como modo de
amenizar a escravidão, pois
delas também os negros
participavam, num de seus
raros momentos de liberdade
no cotidiano de cativeiro pois,
além da participação de todos
nas comemorações religiosas
ser um preceito bíblico, a
população da colônia, à
época, era reduzida e os
regozijos necessitavam de
muita gente não apenas para
produzi-los, como para
desfrutá-los e dar-lhes feições
celebrativas.
Juntamente com a
religiosidade, da qual elas
não se separam, as festas
parecem ter sido um dos
fortes elementos de
mediação entre as diferentes
manifestações culturais que
povoaram o Brasil e que
deram origem à cultura
nacional. Nelas, negros,
festivities, especially the
religious ones, as moments of
relaxation, devotion, leisure,
and as a replenishing of their
strength and hope, as well as a
means to reaffirm their values,
although far away from their
homeland.
The festivals were also
important because they
offered a temporary relief from
slavery for the blacks, who
also took part in them, in rare
moments of freedom in a
lifetime of captivity. Not only
was it a biblical precept that
everyone should participate in
the religious festivities, but
also, at that time, the
population of the colony was
small, and celebrations
required a large number of
people, both to organize and
to enjoy them, so as to create
a merry atmosphere.
Along with religion, the
festivities, an inseparable
element of the former, seem to
have been one of the strongest
elements mediating among the
diverse cultural manifestations
that populated Brazil and gave
origin to its national culture.
They brought together blacks,
Indians and whites, in
moments free from daily toil
