LARGOS, CORETOS E PRAÇAS DE BELÉM - Monumenta

Na seqüência da criação
histórica dos largos e das
praças de Belém, podemos
considerar que a abertura das
extensas áreas que se
chamaram largos seguiu, de
certa forma, uma ordem
adequada à relação de poder
existente desde a época
colonial até a fase republicana.
O largo representava,
segundo o conceito urbanístico
português, o espaço amplo e
descampado que o tempo se
encarregava de envolver com
prédios, em sua maioria de
grande representatividade para
a cidade.
A mudança na
nomenclatura dos espaços
públicos de Belém acelerou-se
no exacerbado entusiasmo
político que se seguiu à
proclamação da República,
amparada pelos princípios da
Revolução Francesa e
derrubada da monarquia.

republicanos se passavam, a
conjunção da mudança de
juízo da arte de edificar e a

The Largos
The historical sequence in
the creation of Belém’s largos
and squares lead us to think
that the clearing of the
spacious areas that came to be
known as largos somehow
followed the order dictated by
the evolution of power
relationships, from colonial
times until the republican era.
In the Portuguese urban
planning conception, the
largos were simply extensive
open spaces, which, in time,
would be spontaneously
surrounded by buildings, most
of them highly significant for
the town.
The change in the names
of Belém’s public spaces was
accelerated by the unbridled
political enthusiasm that
followed the proclamation of
the Republic, inspired by the
principles of the French
Revolution and by the
overthrowing of the
monarchy.
