A Primeira Expansão 30 The First Expansion Praça Dom Pedro II. Dom Pedro II Square. Aproveitando o largo aberto e considerando sua distância do núcleo habitacional, o governo da colônia construiu ali um depósito de pólvora e armamentos, retirando do forte seus estoques e os transferindo para o novo local. Seu nome mudou, então, para Largo da Pólvora, depois Praça Dom Pedro II e hoje Praça da República. Com o cemitério e o depósito de pólvora, o movimento na Travessa dos Mirandas tornou-se constante, permitindo um crescimento maior ao já então chamado bairro da Campina. Later on, taking advantage of its distance from the town center, the government of the colony decided to build a gunpowder and weapons warehouse on the new largo, so they could move their stocks from the fort to the new location. Its name was then changed to Largo da Pólvora (Gunpowder Largo), later known as Dom Pedro II Square and currently República Square. Due to the cemetery and the gunpowder warehouse, the Mirandas Lane became a busy street, spurring the growth of the borough by then called Campina.
