6 Case studies The following case studies are drawn from the collective experiences of the medical modelling researchers at the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research (PDR) and their various collaborators. The cases were selected for their diversity as well as their technical, clinical and academic merit. To ensure the quality of the case studies included in this book, the majority have been taken from texts that have been previously published in international peer-reviewed journals. However, the texts have been altered to refl ect their position in this book and to eliminate repetition, particularly of technical descriptions that appear in the earlier chapters of the book. Therefore, you will fi nd regular references to those previous chapters in these case studies. As some of these case studies were originally written for specialist audiences, the explanation of some technical or medical terms has been inserted to enable the reader from either a medical or technical background to understand the cases described. Where these would prove a distraction, you may be directed to a more substantial explanation in Chapter 8. Other aspects such as trademarks and company names may have been updated to refl ect the correct details at the time of writing. Where possible any technology that has been superseded has also been noted. Appropriate acknowledgement has been given at the beginning of each case study to those that contributed to it and the original source is shown should you wish to locate and read the original version. The case studies have been grouped into four categories: implementation, surgical applications, rehabilitation and research. The fi rst papers relate to aspects of the general implementation and application of medical modelling, including setting up procedures and problems that may be encountered. The second group consist of papers relating to surgical applications such as reconstructive surgery or joint replacement. The third group of articles broadly relate to rehabilitation. This includes the design and fabrication of prostheses, the production of custom fi tting devices or other techniques that may be undertaken by prosthetists in the laboratory. The 97
98 Medical modelling fi nal group of papers are loosely termed research. This section contains papers on diverse subjects that do not necessarily involve the treatment of an individual patient or are slightly outside the normal practices of medical modelling, such as archaeology.
