The overall process thermal efficiency with the coproduction was 80.5 percent. #### RUSSIAN/CZECH COAL GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY LOOKING FOR A BUYER A news item in Chemical Engineering states that ZVU A.S. (Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic) has been trying to find Western buyers for its coal gasification technology. The 300-500 kilogram per hour pilot plant was shut down for several months, starting early last year. However, the company had hoped to restart It sometime late last year. The plant was built with the assistance of Russia's Ivtan Research Institute (Moscow) in 1989. Until there is a commercial demonstration plant, there is thought to be little chance of sell ing the technology in the West. #### U.S./RUSSIA JOINT IGCC PROJECT POSSIBLE A report in Coal & Svnfuels Technology says that the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Battelle Corporation and United Tech nologies Inc. are teaming up in a 7-year project to help the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) develop in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant. It was reported that the group recently completed preliminary analyses for the project, paving the way for a feasibility study. A RAS spokesman was quoted as saying construction on the Russian IGCC will almost immediately begin after the feasibility study is completed. 4-32 IGCC is being considered in Russia as a retrofit option for the nation's aging, dirty, coal-fired powerplants. IGCC Is attractive to Russian power generators because of Its efficiency and the potential to reduce SOx and NOx emissions to 20 ppm. Current SOx and NOx levels from Rus sian powerplants are 10 times that high. #### LIGNITE GASIFICATION PROJECT PLANNED FOR INDIA According to a report In Chemical Engineering. Oswal Agro Ltd. of India and Sasol of South Africa are in the early stages of planning a joint- venture lignite gasification project to produce syn thetic natural gas, methanol and acetic acid. Further announcements are expected this year. The plant would be built in the Kutch region of Gujarat State in India. Sasol would provide the process technology capital required. and 20-25 percent of the #### COAL GASIFICATION PROJECTS INCREASE IN CHINA Clean coal technology projects continue to proliferate in China (see Figure 1). Some recent announcements include the following. Shanxi Province According to China Daily air and water pollution in the industrialized regions of Shanxi Province will be lowered with construction of five new projects involving heat generation and coal gas. Using loans from international financial organiza tions and governments, the province hopes to reduce annual pollution of sulfur dioxide gases by 21,000 tons and dust and smoke by 51,000 tons. COAL FIGURE 1 CHINESE CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS Shanxi is one of the most important centers in China for coal mining and electricity. With the approval of the State Council, the province plans to construct the five projects with the help of loans requested from the Asian Development Bank. The projects involve three large industrial cities in the province-Taiyuan, Datong and Yangquan, where they will provide residents with heating and coal gas while improving local air conditions. Shanxi is rich in coal but suffers from a severe shortage of unpolluted water.
