a final feasibility study into a coal-based chemi
cals complex at Baotou. The project, which
would use coal reserves from Shenmu, Shanxi
Province and Dongsheng, Inner Mongolia, would
have annual capacities for 330,000 metric tonnes
of ammonia, 570,000 metric tonnes of urea,
330,000 metric tonnes of methanol, and
220,000 metric tons of acetic acid and acetic acid
derivatives. It would cost about $1 billion and
come onstream in year 2000.

THREE-TON/DAY GASIFIER TEST UNIT
UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN SOUTH KOREA
A 3-ton per day Bench-Scale Unit (BSU) In
tegrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)
gasifier is under construction in South Korea as
part of a strategy to develop a complete engineer
ing package for IGCC key components. The test

unit was described by H. Kim et al. of Ajou Univer
sity, Suwon, Korea and the Institute for Advanced
Engineering (IAE), Seoul, at the 1 1th Annual Pitts
burgh Coal Conference last fall.
The project is sponsored by the Korea Govern
ment through a grant to the Energy System
Research Center of Ajou University, with the par
ticipation of IAE, Daewoo Corporation, DSHM
(Daewoo Shipbuilding and Heavy Machinaries)
and United Pacific Technologies.
An oxygen-blown, entrained gasification process
was chosen because of its higher thermal ef
ficiency
and mature demonstration of technol
ogy. A schematic diagram of the IGCC BSU is
shown in Figure 1. Pulverized coal is dried to
less than 5 percent surface moisture for
flowability through the feeding system. Fluxing
agents are required with certain coals to allow
slagging
temperatures and to reduce slag
