A–12 Recreational Boating: Fuel use by recreational boating from 1977-on was calculated using the methodology developed by D. L. Greene in the report, Off-Highway Use of Gasoline in the United States (DOT, FHWA, July 1986, p. 3-22). Results from Model 1 in the report indicated an average annual consumption of 205 gallons per boat. Total consumption in gallons was then calculated using the following equation: Total = 0.95 (Gal/boat) (number of boats). An estimate of number of recreational boats in operation is from the U.S. Coast Guard (numbered boats). Fuel use for recreational boating from 1970 to 1976 was from FHWA, Highway Statistics, 1976, Table MF-24, and annual editions 1970-75.
