Note.—Hadriani preserves its ancient name in the usual Romaic form <strong>of</strong> the third case, 'A^piavovi,<br />

or vulgarly Edrenus. It was situated on the left bank <strong>of</strong> the Rhyndacus, about twenty-five miles<br />

direct above Germe. On some <strong>of</strong> its <strong>coins</strong> the town has the epithet wpoe 'OXvixirov, or Trp<strong>of</strong><br />

'0Xi''/i7r((J> or iv 'OXiinrif. As it was on the opposite side <strong>of</strong> the river to Mount Olympus, the<br />

'OXu/iTTijj'f) must have extended beyond the Rhyndacus.<br />

HALICARNASSUS Caria;.<br />

Note.—Halicarnassus was a colony <strong>of</strong> Troezen, hence the emblems <strong>of</strong> Pallas and Neptune<br />

are common to both cities.<br />

Satraps <strong>of</strong> Halicarnassus and Caria.<br />

Note. Hecatomnos, tyrant <strong>of</strong> Halicarniissus, who was satrap <strong>of</strong> Caria under the Persian monarch,<br />

had three sons, Maussollus, or Mausolus, Idrieus, and Pixodarus, and two daughters, Artemisia,<br />

married to Mausolus, and Ada, married to Idrieus. Mausolus succeeded his father in 377 u.c.,and,<br />

dying in 353, was succeeded by Artemisia, who died in 351, and was succeeded by Idrieus. To<br />

Idrieus, at his death in B.C. 344, succeeded Ada, who at the end <strong>of</strong> three years was expelled by<br />

Pixodarus. This satrap <strong>of</strong> Caria died in 335 D.C., and was succeeded by Othontopates, who had<br />

married his daughter.<br />

It was from this Persian that Alexander took Halicarnassus, and then
