Note.—In attesting its gratitude to benefactors, Mytilene seems to have gone beyond most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

other states <strong>of</strong> Greece, The ordinary custom was to record the names <strong>of</strong> such persons as (ifpyerai<br />

on pillars [arriKai). At Mytilene they were honoured on its <strong>coins</strong> as heroes, heroines, and one as a<br />

god ; as appears from one <strong>of</strong> the preceding <strong>coins</strong>. This was Theophanes, the friend <strong>of</strong> Pompeius<br />

Magnus, his companion in the East, the author <strong>of</strong> memoirs <strong>of</strong> those expeditions, and as such fre-<br />

quently quoted by Strabo, who styles him irdvriav 'EWijvwv iiriij>avi
