MYNDUS Cariae.<br />

Note.—The walls, theatre, and other remains <strong>of</strong> Myndus, are found at a liarbour on the western<br />

coast <strong>of</strong> Caria, between the gulfs <strong>of</strong> Cos and lasus, ten<br />

geographical miles north-westward <strong>of</strong> Halicamassus.<br />

By the Turks the harbour is called Gumishlu.<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Jupiter to r. R. MYNAIiiN. Globe between horns, surmounted by two<br />

feathers ; below, two ears <strong>of</strong> corn ; still lower, to ?., helmet ?<br />

Note.—The principal type is Egyptian, and is found, together <strong>with</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> Isis, on <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

the neighbouring lasus.<br />

Gordianus.<br />

AYT. KAI. M. ANT. rOPAIANOC CGB. Bust <strong>of</strong> Gordian to r. R. MYPeQN.<br />

Two men armed <strong>with</strong> bipennes, on either side <strong>of</strong> a tree, appear prepared to cut<br />

it down, when each <strong>of</strong> them is opposed by a serpent ; in the middle <strong>of</strong> the tree<br />

stands a figure <strong>of</strong> Juno Pronuba.<br />

Note.—Juno Pronuba, as represented on <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Samus, Apameia, Hypsepa, Mseonia, is a common<br />

type also on the <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Myra.<br />

MYRHINA ^olidis.<br />

Note.— Myrhina, according to Strabo, was one <strong>of</strong> the cities <strong>of</strong> this coast named from the Amazones ;<br />

the others were Cyme, Smyrna, and Ephesus. The position <strong>of</strong> Myrhina has not been exactly ascer-<br />

tained, though it has been clearly described by Strabo.<br />

right hand, patera ; in left hand, branch, <strong>with</strong> pendent vittse ; below, diota and<br />

cortina ; in field to ?., mon. 59 ; all <strong>with</strong>in a wreath <strong>of</strong> bay. From the Col-<br />

lection <strong>of</strong> the Duke <strong>of</strong> Devonshire.<br />

Note.—TYiR types <strong>of</strong> this coin relate undoubtedly to the Apollo <strong>of</strong> Grynium, which was a hierum<br />

and small town in the territory <strong>of</strong> Myrhina, forty stades distant from it (Strabo, p. 622).<br />
