ANTIGONUS I. (Gonafas),<br />

Son <strong>of</strong> Demetrius I., began to reign b.c. 277.<br />

The entire field <strong>of</strong> the obverse represents a round Macedonian shield, on which seven<br />

crescents, each containing a star, surround a head <strong>of</strong> Pan to I. ; two short<br />

horns in front <strong>of</strong> the head, and a pedum, or shepherd's club, behind. R. BA-<br />

SIAEQ2 ANTiroNOY. Pallas in long drapery and armed, hurls a fulmen <strong>with</strong><br />

her right hand ; on her shield appears the Gorgo or head <strong>of</strong> Medusa and the<br />

segis ; from her arms hang pendent the forked ends <strong>of</strong> the pallium ; in field on<br />

I. a pointed helmet <strong>with</strong> cheek-pieces and double crest ; on r. mon. 72.<br />

Note.—To Pan was attributed the terror so fatal to the Gauls at Delphi in 279 B.C., and which was<br />

followed by their retreat from Greece and the recovery <strong>of</strong> the kingdom by Antigonus. It is <strong>with</strong> an<br />

allusion to the same events that Pan is represented in the act <strong>of</strong> erecting a trophy on many <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Antigonus.<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Pallas to r. R. BA ; (BainXiut) Pan naked, <strong>with</strong> short tail and two horns,<br />

to r., erecting a trophy ; between his feet mon. 30 'ANT(iy6>'oii) ; in field on I.<br />

a pointed helmet as before.<br />
