HALIOARNASSUS Caria.<br />

Note.—At the Turkish town <strong>of</strong> Budrum, situated on a circular harbour at the entrance <strong>of</strong> the great<br />

gulf <strong>of</strong> Cos or Ceraraus, the entire circuit <strong>of</strong> the defences <strong>of</strong> Halicarnassus on the land side are<br />

traceable (V. the Paper <strong>of</strong> Capt. Spratt, R.N,, and his Plan and View <strong>of</strong> Budrum in the Transactions<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Royal Society <strong>of</strong> Literature, v. p. 1). Since that time a mission sent to Harlicarnassus by Her<br />

Majesty's Foreign Secretary, Lord Clarendon, under the direction <strong>of</strong> Mr. C. T. Newton, now Consul<br />

at Rome, has been successful not only in obtaining materials for an architectural restoration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mausoleum, but has enriched our national collection <strong>with</strong> a colossal statue <strong>of</strong> Maussolus, a production<br />

justifying the fame <strong>of</strong> the celebrated artists who were employed by Artemisia to decorate the monument<br />

<strong>of</strong> her deceased husband.<br />

Note.— Baalbek its preserves ancient name, which was translated by the <strong>Greek</strong>s into Heliopolis.<br />

Here stood an ancient temple <strong>of</strong> Baal, which, in the first century <strong>of</strong> the Christian tera, was occupied<br />

The earliest extant <strong>coins</strong> are <strong>of</strong> Nerva, the latest <strong>of</strong> Gallienus.<br />

brant in civitate, quae Heliopolis vocatur."<br />
