Note.—The Lydian Magnesia is situated at the northern foot <strong>of</strong> Mount Sipylus, at the distance <strong>of</strong> a<br />

few miles from the left bank <strong>of</strong> the Hermus, and preserves its ancient name.<br />

Note.—The legend, the flowing hair, and the large lock in front <strong>of</strong> this obveree, such as is com-<br />

monly observable on heads <strong>of</strong> Neptune, favour the opinion, when connected <strong>with</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the following<br />

reverses, which represents a river-god, <strong>with</strong> the legend CIIIYAOY, that the small tributary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mseander which flows by Magnesia, bore the same name as the mountam, and that the river, rather<br />

than the mountain, is alluded to on these <strong>coins</strong>.<br />
