TIBERIAS Galilffiffi.<br />

Note.—This city received its name in honour <strong>of</strong> the Emperor Tiberius from its founder Herodes<br />

Antipas, son <strong>of</strong> Herodes I. It was situated on the western shore <strong>of</strong> the lake <strong>of</strong> Gennesaretli, a little<br />

northward <strong>of</strong> the hot sources <strong>of</strong> Emmaus (Joseph. B. Jud. iv. 1, 3) ; it is called Tabarieh by the<br />

natives.<br />

Note.—The KAAYAIO in the name <strong>of</strong> Tiberias was added by Herodes Agrippa, grandson <strong>of</strong><br />

Herodes I., in return for the enlargement <strong>of</strong> his dominions by the Emperor Claudius, whom he had<br />

assisted at Rome in securing the imperial dignity. For the epoch <strong>of</strong> Tiberias, see Eckhel (iii. p. 427),<br />

who leaves the year <strong>of</strong> the commencement doubtful, from a.d. 17 to a.d. 22.<br />
