Note.—A comparison <strong>of</strong> Thucydides (C, 96), <strong>of</strong> Strabo (p. 268), and <strong>of</strong> the Antonine Itinerary<br />

leave no doubt that ^tna stood about ten miles above Catania to the north-west, near Licodia ;<br />

but its exact site has not been ascertained. The ancient name <strong>of</strong> tlie place was Inessa, but was<br />

changed to jEtna, when a colony which had been established at Catana, by Hiero I., was soon after<br />

his death expelled from thence, and then occupied Inessa.<br />

Note.— Agyrium, the birth-place <strong>of</strong> Diodorus, and in his time one <strong>of</strong> the leading cities <strong>of</strong> Sicily,<br />

retains its name slightly corrupted, as well as some vestiges <strong>of</strong> its ancient buildings, at San Filippo<br />

d'Argird, on a l<strong>of</strong>ty height between the sites <strong>of</strong> Enna and Centuripse.<br />
