MARONEIA Thraciae.<br />

Note.—Maroneia was situated on the northern shore <strong>of</strong> the JEgx&n, about midway between the<br />

rivers Hebrus and Nestus. The name Ismarus was common to the city and the mountain, at the<br />

foot <strong>of</strong> which it stood, until the former received that <strong>of</strong> Maroneia from Maron, son <strong>of</strong> Evantheus.<br />

In the Odyssey, where Ulysses relates how he intoxicated Polyphemus, he says :<br />

These lines are alone sufficient to explain the types and symbols <strong>of</strong> Bacchus on the <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Maroneia<br />

as well as the head <strong>of</strong> Apollo on some <strong>of</strong> them. The name and some remains <strong>of</strong> Maroneia are still<br />

extant at the western end <strong>of</strong> Mount Ismarus.<br />
