Donina therefore was struck in or between the years 198, 217; and hence the coramencement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

tera <strong>of</strong> Laodiceia must liave been a.d. 110— 129, that is to say, in the latter years <strong>of</strong> Trajan, or in the<br />

reign <strong>of</strong> Hadrian. The great earthquake, which history records as having destroyed Laodiceia,<br />

happened in tlie reign <strong>of</strong> Tiberius ; and on that occasion, as we are told by Tacitus (Annal. 14, 27),<br />

the people were able to restore the city by their own resources. But as ttie place was particularly<br />

subject to such visitations (ii yap rif dXXi), coi »; \aoliKiia ivauaTos, Strabo, p. 5^G),<br />

one <strong>of</strong> them<br />

occurring during the years above mentioned may have called for the commiseration and generosity <strong>of</strong><br />

Trajan or <strong>of</strong> Hadrian, and may have become the commencement <strong>of</strong> an cera.<br />
