Note.—The lower arithmetical letters on these <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Aradus have not been explained. Tht'<br />

<strong>of</strong> an asi'a which com-<br />

upper have been proved from imperial <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Aradus to have been the years<br />

menced in the year B.C. 259, in the reigns <strong>of</strong> Ptolemy II. <strong>of</strong> Egypt and Antiochus II. <strong>of</strong> Syria, and<br />

which is traced on <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Elagabalus as late as the year 477 <strong>of</strong> the autonomy <strong>of</strong> Aradus, or a.d. 218.<br />

The year 140 <strong>of</strong> the same sera on the preceding coin is B.C. 119, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Antiochus VIII.<br />

(Grypus). The lower numbers cannot mark the years which had elapsed from some earlier event,<br />

the differences between the lesser and greater number on the two <strong>coins</strong> not being the same.<br />
