N(A£.—The Phrygian cap <strong>with</strong> pendant flaps, as here represented on a head <strong>of</strong> the god Lnnns, is<br />

precisely <strong>of</strong> the same kind as on the preceding coin <strong>of</strong> Lampsacus. It is the same cap which we<br />

find, but <strong>with</strong> the anterior flaps tied together under the chm, on the <strong>coins</strong> inscribed BA2IA or<br />

BA2IAEQ2, and which represent Persian kings when they were masters <strong>of</strong> Asia Minor. It is the<br />

same also as that worn by the Persian monarch in the great mosaic <strong>of</strong> Pompeii. But it is totally<br />

difi-erent from the Persian tiara. It would seem, therefore, to have been assumed by the kings <strong>of</strong><br />

Persia, as being a sacred <strong>Greek</strong> head-dress, which thus placed them in the rank <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greek</strong> deities.<br />
