Note.—The temple <strong>of</strong> Juno stood five miles south-west <strong>of</strong> Croton, on a promontory now called Nau<br />

(roC Naou), anciently Lacinium.<br />

Note.— In the later times, indicated by the style <strong>of</strong> these <strong>coins</strong>, Hercules was particularly wor-<br />

shipped as presiding over gymnasia, and over the Olympic games, in which the Crotoniatce <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

carried <strong>of</strong>f the first prize ; hence a mythus was invented which connected him <strong>with</strong> the naming <strong>of</strong><br />

the city, and he received the honours <strong>of</strong> founder (oi/ciirrae).<br />
