Kote.—This exploit <strong>of</strong> Diomedes, one <strong>of</strong> the leaders <strong>of</strong> the Arglves to Troy, was the subject <strong>of</strong><br />

a painting in the Propylaea at Athens, the subject <strong>of</strong> which is described by Pausanias (Attic, c. 22)<br />

as AwfiiiStfs Trjv 'Adqvav d^atpov/icvoi i$ 'IXiov.<br />

Note.—The harpa refers to the native hero, Perseus, in honour <strong>of</strong> whom there were many<br />

monuments in Argos, as may be seen in Pausanias. It is almost needless to add, that the club and<br />

crescent are symbols <strong>of</strong> the worship <strong>of</strong> Hercules and Diana, who had also temples in Argos.<br />

Note.— Millingen in his M^dailles Grecques Inedites, p. 53, has attributed these two <strong>coins</strong> to<br />

Charisiso <strong>of</strong> Arcadia. But Charisise was never any thing more than one <strong>of</strong> the numerous small fortified<br />

places <strong>of</strong> that country, none <strong>of</strong> which ever struck money. On the foundation <strong>of</strong> Megalopolis, the<br />

remaining inhabitants <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> them retired <strong>with</strong>in the walls <strong>of</strong> that city. Charisiee stood at a<br />

distance <strong>of</strong> not more than three miles from Megalopolis ; and Pausanias (Arcad. 36) says <strong>of</strong> it,<br />
