the year 229 or 83 b.c. was that in which Philip's reign was terminated by the accession <strong>of</strong> Tigranes,<br />

who, encouraged by the dissensions among the successors <strong>of</strong> Grypus, and by a party favourable<br />

to him in Syria, easily conquered the whole country as well as Cilicia.<br />

Fourth son <strong>of</strong> Antiochus VIII., began to reign b.c. 95 or 94.<br />

Note. Demetrius III. reigned in conjunction <strong>with</strong> his brother Philip, until, a war occurring<br />

between them, Demetrius was taken, in the year 88 or 87 B.C., in his camp, near Berrhoea, by the<br />

Parthians, who were in alliance <strong>with</strong> Philip, and was carried prisoner into Parthia, where he died.<br />

NoU.—Re seized upon Coele-Syria, and assumed the title <strong>of</strong> king after having defeated and captured<br />

his brother Demetrius III., but was himself soon afterwards killed by the Arabs, on the<br />

boi'ders <strong>of</strong> Coele-Syria.
