Note.— Silver <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> this weight are rare in the islands <strong>of</strong> the Mgeau. This accords <strong>with</strong> the<br />

remark <strong>of</strong> Herodotus (5, 28) that Naxus in the time <strong>of</strong> Dareius, or the prohable date <strong>of</strong> the present<br />

coin, was the most opulent <strong>of</strong> all the islands. The types <strong>of</strong> the autonomous <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Naxus relate<br />

constantly to Bacchus.<br />
