Note.— Tills commencement <strong>of</strong> the reign <strong>of</strong> Demetrius Nicator is taken from the date <strong>of</strong> his victory<br />

over Antiochus VI., son <strong>of</strong> Alexander Balas, near Antioch. In the year 141 B.C. lie marched into<br />

Parthia, where he was defeated, and remained more than nine years a captive. In the meantime<br />

Antiochus VI., the infant son <strong>of</strong> Balas, had been set up by Diodotus <strong>of</strong> Apameia, sumamed Tryphon.<br />

and had been murdered by the same after a reign <strong>of</strong> three or four years, and Antiochus Sidetes,<br />

brother <strong>of</strong> Demetrius II., had entered Syria to claim the throne. In b.c. 138, Tryphon was defeated<br />

by Sidetes and slain.<br />

NIKATOPOS. Female figure in long drapery adv. ; on her head three elevations<br />

(perhaps a mural crown) ; on either side <strong>of</strong> the head a globule ; on<br />

either side <strong>of</strong> the neck a star ; in right hand thyrsus, in left hand I ; from<br />

the waist downwards on either side a support resembling those <strong>of</strong> Juno Samia<br />

and Diana Ephesia. Electrotype.<br />

Note.—In Duane, plate xiv., the obverse <strong>of</strong> a similar coin has MAA in place <strong>of</strong> M, shewing that<br />

these <strong>coins</strong> were struck at Mallus, and that the reverse represents probably a statue <strong>of</strong> Astarte, in<br />

that city.<br />
