Nicephonis or Aetophorus, i. e. bearing in his hand either a small figure <strong>of</strong> Victory, or an eagle. In<br />

Macedonia he had the epithets also <strong>of</strong> Soter and Apobaterius.<br />

Note.—This coin was procured by Major Rawlinson, at Hilla, on the site <strong>of</strong> Babylon, and was<br />

found, as he informs me, in the year 1849, together <strong>with</strong> many other decadrachraa <strong>of</strong> Alexander, in<br />

the ruins called the temple <strong>of</strong> Belus ; the greater part were melted at Bagdad ; a few were carried<br />

to India. There can be little doubt that they were struck at Babylon.<br />

Note,— Cousinery, who, from his long residence in Macedonia, was well qualtfied to judge, remarked<br />

that the thicker and smaller tetradrachma <strong>of</strong> Alexander III. were those most commonly found in<br />

Macedonia.<br />

Note.—The throne <strong>of</strong> Jupiter on the obverses <strong>of</strong> the <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alexander III. has sometimes a back,<br />

sometimes a footstool, and sometimes neither the one nor the other. It has not been thought neces-<br />

sary to notice any further these slight variations <strong>of</strong> type.<br />
