gulf, assured to it an importance which is sufficiently apparent in history, but the abundance <strong>of</strong><br />

its silver money was, in great measure, the consequence <strong>of</strong> its vicinity to the argentiferous district <strong>of</strong><br />

Chalcidice. Some remains <strong>of</strong> Acanthus are still to be seen on the shore <strong>of</strong> the Strymonic Gulf ; for<br />

a description <strong>of</strong> which, ride Travels in Northern Greece, ii. p. 147.<br />

Note.— It is remarkable that on the <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> ^niadse, which is situated on the bank <strong>of</strong> the Ache-<br />

lous, the human head has, together <strong>with</strong> the neck, ears, and horns <strong>of</strong> a bull, a long beard ; thuB<br />

according <strong>with</strong> the description <strong>of</strong> Achelous by Dejauira in the Trachinise, v. 9, seq. Nevertheless, there<br />

can be no doubt that the head on the present coin was intended for the deified Achelous and it is<br />

;<br />

observable, that on the <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the Sicilian cities the rivers are personified as young men.<br />

The name Lycurgus must be that <strong>of</strong> a magistrate ; as, on other silver <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Acamanians, we<br />

find different names, similarly placed.<br />
