Note.—The ruined walls <strong>of</strong> Kpdvtoi are still extant, about two miles to the south-east <strong>of</strong> Argostdlij<br />

in Kefaloni'a, and afford an excellent specimen <strong>of</strong> the defensive architecture <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Greek</strong>s in a very<br />

remote age. The site is still known by the name Krani&. Argostolium was I<br />

perhaps the ancient<br />

name <strong>of</strong> the port, or maritime suburb <strong>of</strong> Cranii.— Vide Travels in N. Greece, III. p. 61.<br />

Note.— Cydonia, by means <strong>of</strong> its advantageous position on the northern shore <strong>of</strong> the western penin-<br />

sula <strong>of</strong> Crete, has preserved its relative importance among the Cretan towns ; but its ancient name,<br />

like that <strong>of</strong> the two other chief cities <strong>of</strong> the island, Gortys and Cnossus, has become obsolete. It is<br />

now called Khani^, which the Italians have converted into Can^a.<br />

Note.— Miletus, son <strong>of</strong> Acacallis, daughter <strong>of</strong> Minos, by Apollo, or, according to another version<br />

<strong>of</strong> the mythus, by Hermes, was exposed by the mother in the woods, and suckled by a wolf sent by<br />

the god. Miletus was said to have been the founder <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> that name in Asia.<br />

Note.— Crete was famous for its bowmen, and particularly the Cydonians (Claudian, Histrix,<br />

V. 46). The long horns <strong>of</strong> the Cretan wild-goat were preferred for making the bow, whence the<br />

head <strong>of</strong> that animal on many Cretan <strong>coins</strong>. When the bow was strung, it was s<strong>of</strong>tened by fire<br />

(Homer, Od. *. v. 176).<br />
