CHERSONASUS Cretse.<br />

Note.—Chersonasus was the port <strong>of</strong> Lyttus, and, judging from its <strong>coins</strong>, a city <strong>of</strong> not inferior<br />

importance. It still preserves its ancient name, and near it there is another village, Episkopiand,<br />

the name <strong>of</strong> wliich is a record <strong>of</strong> the no longer existing bishoprick <strong>of</strong> Chersonasus. One <strong>of</strong> its<br />

bishops sat in the second council <strong>of</strong> Nicjea (Strabo, p. 479. Hierocl., p. C50. Paslilcy, Tr. in<br />

Crete, i. p. 268).<br />
