Tigranes was deprived <strong>of</strong> his Syrian domlniong by LucuUus in b.c. (!9.<br />

Bust <strong>of</strong> Tigranes to r. wearing the Armenian tiara, on which is a star between two eagles,<br />

looking towards the star ; a <strong>Greek</strong> diadem encircles the forehead and the tiara,<br />

<strong>with</strong> fillets pendent behind the latter; a chlamys covers the shoulders. B. BA-<br />

2IAEas TirPANOY. A female figure (Antiocheia), turreted, and in ample drapery,<br />

seated on a rock to /•., holds a palm branch ; her right foot is on the<br />

shoulder <strong>of</strong> the upper half <strong>of</strong> a naked male figure, <strong>with</strong> arms extended (river<br />

Orontes in a swimming attitude) ; in field to I. mon. 86 ; the whole <strong>with</strong>in a<br />

wreath <strong>of</strong> bay. From the Thomas Collection (2689).<br />

seated to I. on a rock ; right arm extended ; in left hand a cornucopise ; at<br />

ANTIOCHUS XIII. (Asiaticus),<br />

Reigned from 69 to 65 b.c, and assumed the same titular names as Antiochus XII.,<br />

except that <strong>of</strong> Dionysus.<br />

Note.—Antiochus XIII. was sent to govern Syria by Lucullus, when he defeated Tigranes<br />

in Armenia, in B.C. 69. In 65 B c. Pompeius deposed Antiochus, and reduced Syria to a Roman<br />

province.<br />

ANTIOCHUS I.<br />

Note.—In 64 B.C. Antiochus made peace <strong>with</strong> Pompeius, who added a part <strong>of</strong> Mesopotamia, including<br />

Seleuceia, on the Tigris, to his dominions. He died about B.c. 32. Of his successors, Mithridates I.,<br />

Antiochus II., Mithridates II., and Antiochus III., no <strong>coins</strong> are known.<br />

I^ote.—The fabric, as well as the type, shew this coin to have been struck in Samosata, the capital<br />

<strong>of</strong> Commagene, <strong>of</strong> which city the <strong>coins</strong> are common.
