Note.— Jonathan was in alliance <strong>with</strong> Alexander Balas, and there are <strong>coins</strong> bearing the legend<br />

BASlAEnS AAEEANAPOT on one side, and " King Jonathan," in Samaritan, on the other: the<br />

following coin was probably struck after the death <strong>of</strong> Balas, when Jonathan espoused the cause first<br />

<strong>of</strong> Demetrius Nicator, and afterwards <strong>of</strong> Antiochus Dionysus. Jonathan was put to death by Try-<br />

phon in B.C. 143.<br />

Poppy-head between two cornuacopise, placed crosswise, but united into one at the<br />

lower end, B. " Jonathan high priest" in Samaritan characters, in five lines<br />

<strong>with</strong>in a wreath.<br />

HERODES [Antipas),<br />

Became Tetrarch <strong>of</strong> Galilwa and Peraia on the death <strong>of</strong> his father Herodes (the Great)<br />

in A.D, 1.<br />

HPQAoY TETPAPXOY. Palm branch placed perpendicularly ; in field, the date<br />

L. AZ (year 37). TIBEPIAE in two lines, <strong>with</strong>in a wreath <strong>of</strong> bay. The date is<br />

probably that <strong>of</strong> his reign, and the same therefore as that <strong>of</strong> the Christian sera.<br />
