Almost quite al<strong>on</strong>e in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wilderness I am, but without <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baptist's liking<br />

for solitude.<br />

He <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten suffered from-<br />

horribly low spirits-a dreadful business is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a thinker.<br />

Here, in 1849, he published " Beauties <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Channing, with an Essay prefixed."<br />

It ends thus :-<br />

And now his simple name is a nobler thing than even <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> books <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> most o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r writers.<br />

In November, 1849, by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aid <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a free passage obtained for him by<br />

Dr. Huntingd<strong>on</strong>, he sailed for Bost<strong>on</strong>, where he arrived after a wretched<br />

voyage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> six weeks. He preached at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thursday lecture, <strong>on</strong> 17 January,<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> First Cliurch, to a great crowd, many had to stand; am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

audience were L<strong>on</strong>gfellow, and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Cambridge pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essors and literary<br />

men. Dr. Rufus Ellis writes :-<br />

' Euthanasy ' had g<strong>on</strong>e before him, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> delighted readers were eager<br />

to see and hear a writer by whom <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y had been so attracted.<br />

Intending to return, he had not resigned his ministry at Kingswood,<br />

but circumstances made him decide up<strong>on</strong> remaining in America, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>nceforth<br />

to be his home, where he married, wrote " Miracles, Past and Present "<br />

(<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first editi<strong>on</strong> (1870) was sold in twelve days), lost his loved wife,<br />

suffered financial difficulties, and quietly passed into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Silent Land, valuing<br />

greatly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cordial kindness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Brooke Herford, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n minister in<br />

Bost<strong>on</strong>, a successor <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dr. Channing and Dr. Gannett, who c<strong>on</strong>ducted his<br />

funeral service, a sad c<strong>on</strong>trast between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> enthusiasm which had greeted<br />

him <strong>on</strong> his arrival in America and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>on</strong>eliness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his departure.<br />

The Rev. James Taplin devoted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last twelve years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his active life-<br />

to making Kingswood better than he found it.*<br />

The main features in his l<strong>on</strong>g life are given in Co&t<strong>on</strong>ia, pp. 34-39.<br />

For all who would know about his s<strong>on</strong> and successor here, Lindsey<br />

Taplin, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> town <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Todmorden, its magnificent church, its Taplin fountain,<br />

and, above all, its inhabitants, will give <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> answer.<br />

It was not until Tuesday, 15 June, 1869, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<strong>on</strong>thly Meeting held<br />

its first ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring at Kingswood, <strong>on</strong> which occasi<strong>on</strong> a serm<strong>on</strong> was preached<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> late Benjamin Wright <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christianity.<br />

*Tablet in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chapel, pity that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> medalli<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> it is not a better portrait <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

devoted minister ! G.E.E.<br />

No early register <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> baptisms nor burials is forthcoming ; if any existed<br />

it possibly perished in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rioters' burning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting-house in 1791.<br />
