egin <strong>on</strong> 23 July, 1771, and are almost complete to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present time. An<br />

engraving <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lower Meeting-house, as it appeared when c<strong>on</strong>verted into<br />

a workshop, is given by RIrs. Hutt<strong>on</strong> Beale, <strong>on</strong> p. 30 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her Me,v~oriaZs,<br />

where we read that so<strong>on</strong> after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opening <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old Meeting-<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>c<strong>on</strong>formists had so increased in'nunlbers that <strong>on</strong>e building was in-<br />

sufficient to hold <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, and ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r chapel was erected, called <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lower<br />

Meeting-house, in Deritend, which must have been frequently exposed to<br />

inundati<strong>on</strong>s from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> river Rea. The Lower Meeting-house was a similar<br />

building to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old, or Higher Meeting (as it was called from its being <strong>on</strong><br />

higher ground), having three gables. It sustained c<strong>on</strong>siderable injury in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sacheverell riots. From a letter, dated Birmingham, July zoth, 1715,<br />

we learn that it was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> private property <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Mr. Russen. The early meeting-<br />

houses were <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> property <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> private individuals. The proprietor, to<br />

save <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> walls, promised <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mob that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building should be used as a<br />

dwelling-house, which promise was not kept, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place was repaired and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society c<strong>on</strong>tinued to worship in it till its removal into Moor Street [New<br />

Meeting] in 1732. The Lower Meeting-house eventually became a workshop,<br />

and has been taken down some years ; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly indicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its former<br />

existence was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gateway which led to it, over which was p!aced "Meeting<br />

House Yard."<br />

This gateway, remembered by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> author, has since been taken down<br />

for street improvements. I11 his preface, dated November, 1862, to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

reprint <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> The Riots at Bi~112zizghanr, Jz~ty, 1791, Mr. Arthur Bache Mattliews<br />

says that in 1727 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>-<br />

purchased, for &o, a piece <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> land about 32 yards by 20, situated <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn side <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a narrow lane, now called h'ew Meeting Street; here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

erected <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Meeting House, which was opened April, 1732, with a serm<strong>on</strong><br />

by its minister, Samuel Bourn. In 1764 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trustees purchased, for A;225,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three houses and land, which were between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building and Moor Street,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> houses were removed, and an open space obtained in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meeting-<br />

house. During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> re-building <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old and New Meeting-houses both<br />

c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s worshipped toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in a chapel in Livery Street, which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

designated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> Meeting-house.<br />

Here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fcu7ministers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two societies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficiated alternately. This<br />

chapel was opened <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 13th November, 1791, by Mr. Coates, who<br />

preached from St. John iv., 23, 24-<br />

But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hour cometh, and now is, when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> true tvorshipper shall worship<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in spirit and in truth : for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r seeketh such to worship<br />

Him. God is a spirit: and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y that worship Him must worship Him in<br />

spirit and in truth.
