The last service in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Old or Great Meeting-house was held <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
evening <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sunday, 16 June, 1850, <strong>on</strong> which occasi<strong>on</strong> a serm<strong>on</strong>, taking<br />
farewell <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building, was preached by its <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n minister, Mr. Piper ;<br />
who gave a short historical notice <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> some interesting events, c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />
with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> origin and progress cf :l<strong>on</strong>c<strong>on</strong>formity in Banbury. To this ser-<br />
m<strong>on</strong>, as preserved in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian lief<strong>on</strong>uer, and to various data recently<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tributed by Mr. Piper's s<strong>on</strong>-in-law, Mr. Edward Cobb (d. 4 April, 1899,<br />
aet. 92, cremated, and ashes interred in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chancel <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this church), <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Lewes, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> author is indebted for much here set down.<br />
The Act <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uniformity compelled Samuel Wells, M.A., vicar <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ban-<br />
bury, to resign his living. Calamy tells us that Wells-<br />
settled, in 1647, at Remnan, in Berks, where his income was about Lzoo<br />
per an., but he had not above 20 families in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parish. In 1649, he accepted<br />
a call to Banbury, tho' <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>its were much less, that he might have ail<br />
opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> doing good to a larger number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> souls. He was <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
presentati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Brinkworth, a rich pars<strong>on</strong>age, but refused it, and c<strong>on</strong>tinued<br />
in Banbury till August, 1662, when he remitted EIOO, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> what was due to
