This society was formed in January, 1877, by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> withdrawal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Rev. W. C. Walters from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Baptist Chapel in Greenend,<br />
who, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with some members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>, felt it incumbent<br />
up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to associate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r to worship God as a church,<br />
not requiring ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r from its minister or its members assent or subscripti<strong>on</strong><br />
to any <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ological creed. For some m<strong>on</strong>ths worship was c<strong>on</strong>ducted in<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Town Hall, whilst <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> erecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an ir<strong>on</strong> church was proceeded with<br />
<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present site in Highgate; which was lent to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> for<br />
a period <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 21 years by Mr. and Mrs. John Gresty, two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most<br />
prominent seceders, at a ground rent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> per an. The church, known<br />
until 1893 as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Free Christian Church, was opened for Divine worship, by<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Baldwin Brown, B.A., <strong>on</strong> Tuesday, 7 August, 1877. His memor-<br />
able serm<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong> this occasi<strong>on</strong>, was founded <strong>on</strong> Ephesians i., v. 22-23-<br />

and -fir pur-oses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> edcccatzbn, arzd that no mi?ziskr or member <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cotzgrqqatio;rz<br />
or charch shall be required to asselzt or subscribe to nny <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ological creed, From<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> has steadily and firmly declined to take any<br />
sectarian name whatsoever ; both Trinitarians and Unitarians are included<br />
