Opened 26 April, 1875.<br />
MINISTERS.<br />
John Harris<strong>on</strong> . . . . . .<br />
Edward William Lummis, M.A.<br />
Frederick Augustus Homer . .<br />
In July, 1859, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Henry McKean, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oldbury, began to c<strong>on</strong>duct<br />
services in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Summit Schools, Sp<strong>on</strong> Lane, where a Sunday school was<br />
at <strong>on</strong>ce established. In 1868, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worshippers removed to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Assembly<br />
Room, Lombard Street, which had, however, to be reliilquished it1 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
following year. For a time it seemed that this attempt to establish a c<strong>on</strong>-<br />
gregati<strong>on</strong> here must collapse, but in March, 1874, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Midland</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christian<br />
Uni<strong>on</strong>, true to its missi<strong>on</strong>ary aim and spirit, invited <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. John Harri-<br />
s<strong>on</strong> to undertake <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> difficult task <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> establishing a permanent c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Public worship was at <strong>on</strong>ce regularly resumed, this time in St. George's<br />
Hall. Subscripti<strong>on</strong>s were invited towards <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> erecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a permanent<br />
building ; very so<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sum promised was sufficient to warrant a begin-<br />
ning, and <strong>on</strong> M<strong>on</strong>day, 26 April, 1875, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present edifice in Lodge Road<br />
was opened for DiGine worship, at a cost ~f &r,4oo. The serm<strong>on</strong>-a<br />
memorable <strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> Unitarianism and free thought in religi<strong>on</strong>-was preached<br />
by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> late Rev. Robert Rodolph Suffield, who, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evening meeting,<br />
spoke <strong>on</strong> his c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Roman Catholic Church. The collecti<strong>on</strong><br />
at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opening service amounted to AII~.<br />
A year later, in April, 1876, at a council meeting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M.C.U., held<br />
at West Bromwich, it was reported that Mr. Harris<strong>on</strong>'s services were no<br />
l<strong>on</strong>ger retained by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong>, but that he hzd been appointed minister to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lodge Road society, it being c<strong>on</strong>sidered that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vigorous c<strong>on</strong>grega-<br />
ti<strong>on</strong> should be entrusted with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> management <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its own affairs. The<br />
happy c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> thus begun between Mr. Harris<strong>on</strong> and this society was<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly ended in July, 1895, when, as stated <strong>on</strong> p. 8, he entered <strong>on</strong> his<br />
duties as missi<strong>on</strong>ary and minister at large for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> M.C.U.<br />
His successor was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. Edward William Lummis, M.A., who had,<br />
during 1895, assisted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. James C. Street at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Church <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>
