No reference is made in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> register to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building operati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1724.<br />

The meeting-house <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n erected retained its original features until <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

restorati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1879-80, when a new ro<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> was put <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sturdy old walls,<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior-<br />

refitted and modernised<br />

at a cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> L~OO. Sir Robert Peel, in his speech <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d reading<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> House <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Comm<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dissenters' Chapels Bill, 1844, alluding<br />

to this place, said :-<br />

For myself I represent a town. There is a Unitarian Chapel <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. It was<br />

founded in 1724. It was founded by Unitarians. There never was a suspici<strong>on</strong><br />

that it was founded for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> promoti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trinitarian doctrines. For fifty-<br />

three years <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a minister holding anti-Trinitarian doctrines. I<br />

recollect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> close <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his life. There was but <strong>on</strong>e single bequest for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

endowment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that chapel, which was left by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that Unitarian<br />

minister. There is religious peace in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>stituency I represent.<br />

The registers, however, which c<strong>on</strong>tain entries by J<strong>on</strong>ah Malkin and<br />

John Byng, bear witness that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first two ministers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

society. The first book begins with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heading :-<br />

A Register <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> such pers<strong>on</strong>s as were baptized by Mr. Ed~~zund Taylor, a n<strong>on</strong>-<br />

dated 25 Dece?nber, I 695, James, s<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Joh?z A~~nshaw, Wil?zcoate ; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last, by<br />

Taylor, <strong>on</strong> 20 March, 170112. Then we have fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r menti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his name<br />

in A Xoul <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> commu7zica?zts in Ta~/rzeto?,th at nty c0nzi~z.g thi<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r October 5,<br />

1703, and places adjacent bel<strong>on</strong>ging to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dissenting Church <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re ad~~zitted by<br />

Mr. Taylor and MY. Blad<strong>on</strong>. Henry Roughly.<br />

Edmund Taylor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n must surely be looked <strong>on</strong> as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first minister<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this society ; in all probability Thomas Bladen assisted him in his work.<br />

An entry <strong>on</strong> 11 April, 1704, makes menti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r minister <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficiat-<br />

ing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re :--Elizabeth, dazghter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Robert Sh@t<strong>on</strong>, was baptized by MY, Robert<br />

Travers, <strong>on</strong> 5 October, 1703/4.<br />

Henry Roughley twice records that he came to Tamworth, <strong>on</strong> 5 October,<br />

1703/4, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are frequent entries by him until his last in 1708. His<br />

was evidently an active ministry here. Under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heading, Admitted by me,<br />

Neary Roz~ghley, since nzy c<strong>on</strong>zing, October 5, 1703, are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> names <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 108 communicants.<br />

He is careful to record <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dates <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir admissi<strong>on</strong>s, and<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r items, such as Julze 24, 1705, Th<strong>on</strong>zas Langham and Elizabeth, his wzjre,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Midlet<strong>on</strong>, by certzj2cate from Hinckley ; and December 30, Sz~ssa~zah Lench, by<br />

cert~jt'cate frotlt <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> loze~er meeting in Bimzinghanz. It is his hand which has<br />
